Jason Momoa’s beard, synonymous with his on-screen personas, is no longer. The actor shaved it all off for a good cause, but fans will still mourn its loss.

The two things that Khal Drogo of Game of Thrones and Arthur Curry from Aquaman have in common are Jason Momoa and his iconic beard. The actor’s hairy face has become one with all of the roles that he’s portrayed on television and the silver screen in the past few years. Sadly, the beard that has become the trademark of Momoa’s characters is no more.

After going seven years without shaving, Momoa has chopped off his mustache and beard. But don’t fret, it’s for a super good cause!

Momoa has embraced going barefaced to bring awareness to how plastics are harming the earth. Momoa posted videos of the shave-off on Youtube and Instagram documenting the experience and is seen walking through a sandy terrain that is littered with trash that’s mostly plastic.

As he takes an electric shaver and removes large parts of his beard, Momoa explains why he’s decided to take the hair off and he starts it all off by saying good-bye to his characters Drogo and Curry.

Momoa goes on to explain the video:

"“Most importantly, I just want to do this to bring awareness. The plastics are killing our planet, and I think I have a solution. I don’t wanna bitch about it. There’s only one thing that can really help our planet and save our planet. As long as we recycle.”"

Momoa proposes in the video that we stop using plastic; in particular, he suggests we abandon water bottles and buy water in aluminum cans. To make the suggestion all the more desirable, Momoa drinks canned water and says that it tastes even better because he knows it’s good for the environment. No need to say anything further Jason, we’re sold just by watching you take the taste test.

The reason for Momoa’s concerns regarding plastic is linked to the overwhelming evidence that our planet is drowning in plastic waste with an estimated 6.9 tons of the stuff laying around.

Plastic is a material that is super hard to break down, and when it does, it’s usually small enough for animals to digest. A massive chunk of that plastic waste is floating around in the ocean killing animals and entire ecosystems. In contrast, aluminum, Momoa noted, is infinitely recyclable.

Good cause and all, not everyone was thrilled with Momoa’s big chop. Some fans took to Twitter to openly mourn the loss of Momoa’s beard. The mourners outnumbered the fans that were ecstatic for one more reason to love Momoa. No matter what stance Momoa stans took, everyone had something to say.

Hopefully, Momoa’s public big chop brings the awareness he hopes to spread on the importance of dumping plastics and moving on to aluminum. As for the fans that are sorely missing his beard already, there’s always hope that he’ll grow it back.
