Producer for The New Mutants explains why the movie’s been so delayed

Earlier this year, Disney announced The New Mutants would be delayed once again. Now producer Simon Kinberg is providing answers as to why.

Fans that were eagerly squirming after the news that an adaptation of the X-Men comic The New Mutants would be released in 2018 discovered pretty fast that the wait was going to be longer than they would have liked. Thus far, The New Mutants release date has been pushed back four times. The last date that was promised was for August 2019, and the sad news is that Disney previously announced the new release date would be April 3, 2020.

The disappointment is deeper then desperation over a highly anticipated movie because The New Mutants is unlike previous X-Men films: the film features a new, young cast portraying a different batch of mutants that have never been seen before.

So what could be keeping us from experiencing all the awesomeness of a horror mutant film? According to producer Simon Kinberg, the final release of the movie has been held up by reshoots. Kinberg told Digital Spy that arranging the reshoots have been the culprit behind the many delays they’ve experienced over the past year.

"Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together. For all of these movies, Marvel’s really brilliant at scheduling pick-ups into their budget and schedule so it’s all prepared, and we have never been that smart. For us, we’re always scrambling to get these actors back together so they’re all in the same place at the same time."

From what we can gather, several things could have contributed to making the reshoots a real problem over the past year. The Disney/Fox merger may have affected how the reshoots were handled. However, Kinberg mentions that Marvel has been great about putting out a budget and schedule which would mean that any discrepancies were resolved quickly.

The real issue with finally getting the reshoots together, according to Kinberg, had been getting the cast together at the same time. The young cast has other projects that must have been difficult to work around. We know this much is true because Maisie Williams, who plays Wolfsbane, has been knee-deep in Game of Thrones‘ final season because she plays Arya Stark. Charlie Heaton, who plays Cannonball, would also be a busy bee to schedule because of his character Jonathon Byers in the upcoming third season of Stranger Things.
