A new Ghostbusters installment will be out next year and is centered in the same cinematic universe as the original films.

It’s been over 30 years since the first Ghostbusters movie hit theatres and the fandom love is still going strong! Entertainment Weekly revealed that Jason Reitman will direct a new Ghostbusters film that exists in the same universe as the original Ghostbusters from the first two films.

Reitman explained that this new Ghostbuster gem will not be a reboot. And unlike the all-female Ghostbuster movie in 2016, it also won’t be a Ghostbuster story that exists on its own with a separate storyline. The new Ghostbusters movie will be an extension of the first two films, and if anything, we can dub it Ghostbusters 3: 30 Years After It All Started.

The 1984 original Ghostbusters spawned a sequel and an animated series making the ghost-busting crew every ’80s kid’s obsession. The coolest fun fact here is that Reitman is not only an ’80s kid who shares the same enthusiasm as the rest of us do, but he’s also the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original movies. While this can put on a lot of pressure on Reitman, we’re hoping his insider knowledge and devotion to the era will help pay homage to the original movies.

There’s no real concrete news on what the movie will be about since Reitman, who also co-wrote the script, is keeping a tight lid on the project hoping to unveil its secrets like a Christmas present. However, there is a teaser trailer already out that shows someone messing around with what may be a proton pack in a barn on a windy night.

While dark music from the original 1984 Ghostbusters movie plays in the background, the winds blow off a tarp inside a barn revealing the ghostbusting car of choice, Ecto 1, looking a little worse for wears.

My speculation is that the original Ghostbusters are retired in the present day and Ecto has been parked and forgotten after a long life of chauffeuring service. If this is true, we just might see the original Ghostbusters mentoring a new group that will take on the responsibilities of fighting the supernatural.

There is no word yet if any of the original cast will be on board for the project that will start filming in the next few months. I’m personally hoping for the return of Zuul and the demon dogs, Slimer, and, of course, what would a Ghostbusters movie be without Bill Murray? The Hollywood Reporter mentioned Dan Aykroyd actually spoiled the development of the movie months ago, so perhaps it means Aykroyd could be involved in the film in some way.
