The new and final Fantastic Beasts trailer offers a huge reveal for one character, with a strong link to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Harry Potter fans are waiting with baited breath for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to finally hit theaters. It’s with good reason since the first film left unanswered questions on Newt Scamander’s next move and Credence’s whereabouts after the debacle in New York City.

The trailers for the upcoming film have teased scenes from the sequel and introduced new mysteries for the fandom. What happens between Scamander and Zoë Kravitz’s character Leta Lestrange? Is Grindelwald still after Credence or does he have bigger fish to fry? And most importantly, who is this mysterious character that actress Claudia Kim will be playing?

Lucky for us, the final trailer was just released, and we’ve got the answer to at least one of those questions. Kim, who plays a Maledictus, is none other than Voldemort’s famed reptilian sidekick, Nagini. According to Entertainment Weekly, Nagini is a part of the the traveling Circus Arcanus and entertains muggles with her enchanting and terrifying transformation.

From what we know of Harry Potter lore, Nagini was possibly Voldemort’s only real friend and assisted in his many killing sprees — most notably, the death of Professor Severus Snape. The snake is turned into a Horcrux to contribute to Voldemort’s immortality as he suspected no one would be brave enough to go up against her. Turning Nagini into a Horcrux assisted him in his plan to live forever, with a piece of his soul magically attached to his precious reptile. That was until the brave Neville Longbottom killed Nagini, destroying the final Horcrux, thus allowing Harry Potter to finally defeat Voldemort. It isn’t until now though that we’ve become aware Nagini was once a human.

The trailers leading to Nagini’s reveal teased that Kim was a Maledictus, a term never mentioned in the Potter universe. Pottermore has been updated to explain that a Maledictus is someone who is a carrier of a blood curse destined to permanently transform into a beast.

Kim told Entertainment Weekly that Nagini will eventually lose her human form and become a snake forever. That clears up any theories that Voldemort magically forced her permanently into snake-hood as she was doomed to living life as a snake from the start.

Although Nagini is a magical creature, it doesn’t necessarily mean she is a wizard. Kim says:

"She has powers that are yet to be explored. I can’t confirm she has powers like wizards have. And she doesn’t have a wand."

As for Nagini’s place in the new Fantastic Beasts movie, Kim says Nagini will be Credence’s only friend. After destroying Manhattan and being tracked by the M.A.C.U.S.A.  in the first film, Credence has joined the same circus as Nagini that mesmerizes muggles with what they think are illusions but are really magical manifestations. Credence is also a magical anomaly that struggles with turning into his dark form, so the friendship really makes sense.

Kim says of Credence and Nagini’s relationship:

"It’s amazing these two broken souls are able to form some kind of friendship within the circus. Credence is special to her because he encourages her to use her power."

There’s still no word on how these characters will tie into Grindelwald’s story. What we do know is that we will learn all about Nagini the woman and how she feels about her looming permanence as a snake.
