Best movie musicals: Hamilton

When Hamilton dropped on Disney+ it was a feel-good moment for so many of us. It was the height of the pandemic, there was a sense of hopelessness and misery that seemed to be everywhere, and yet, a musical that has been raved about for years was finally going to be enjoyed by people who would never have otherwise had a chance.

And Hamilton delivered. It was like we were finally seeing why so many people were head over heels in love with this musical.

While this might be a dramatic retelling of the founding of the United States, it is done in a way that makes history accessible to all. This was a production that took what some might consider boring and gave it fresh life.

And that’s not all this musical did for us. It also gave us music that resonates and goes beyond the stage or the screen. I have songs from the musical in my own playlist and have no problem (or shame) belting out the words to “Burn” while in the shower. Plus, the fact that there is a mixtape of the music from the musical performed by the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Andra Day, and even Jimmy Fallon (his performance of “You’ll Be Back” is worth a listen and a giggle or two) just seals the deal for why this is a musical unlike any other.

While I have certainly seen people who didn’t like Hamilton, for me, it is such a beautiful piece of work that it is hard to ignore just how brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda is.
