27 best movie musicals of all-time: Hamilton, Wizard of Oz and more
Best movie musicals: Les Miserables
Often referred to as Les Mis, Les Miserables is one of the greatest movie musicals I have ever seen. Set against the backdrop of France in the 19th Century, this is a drama that will break your heart in so many ways. This is not a happy story and yet some moments give you hope, and that is something that one needs when watching a musical like this.
Perhaps what helps to elevate Les Mis to just amazing heights is the impressive cast that they were able to assemble. When you can put together a group of performers that includes Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Eddie Redmayne, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Russell Crowe, you know you have struck Hollywood gold.
And with these talents comes a production that can easily steal your breath away. Plus, we can’t forget the music from this film. How can you not fall in love with songs like “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Suddenly,” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?” These are classics in so many ways and the power with which they are sung makes you feel like you are right there in the moment.
Les Miserables might be a tragic story of what humans will do to survive and for the people they love, but it is also a lesson to us all. There is so much beauty to be found in this story, that it should be required viewing for anyone who not only loves musicals but also appreciates history.
There are many movie musicals in the world, and with new ones coming every year, our favorites seem to change all the time. However, there is something about these movie musicals that stands the test of time and entertainment. And if there are any on this list you may have missed, then now is the perfect time to give these a watch and perhaps find a new musical to love.
