Best movie musicals: Beauty and the Beast (Live Action)

While the original animated movie for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was brilliant in its entirety, there was something about the live-action remake that was truly timeless. And the magic of that movie is in its ability to take the animated movie and bring it to life in a way that honors the original story (and the fairytale itself) while still adding something new and fresh to the overall tale.

However, one of the reasons we are truly obsessed with this musical is the fact that we get a cast that includes the talents of Emma Watson, Luke Evans, Dan Stevens, Ian McKellen, Audra McDonald, and Emma Thompson, among others. And their ability to embody the characters they portrayed is so amazing that at times, you truly get lost in the story. (Which is nice because often in musicals, the transition between the spoken words and the singing can be startling.)

Of course, the beauty of this musical is the music itself. Not only do we have the classics of the animated Disney movie such as “Be Our Guest” and “Something There,” but there are also some original songs as well. In fact, with three new songs added to the production, we ended up finding something new to sing in the shower a few times (on repeat).

The fact that there is a prequel happening proves that this is one musical that is not only enduring and beloved but has characters that we all want to know more about.
