Hasbro unveils new Monopoly game where women get more money than men
There is a new Monopoly game from Hasbro in town, and this time it has a much more female-focused look and feel to it. Time to get your Ms. Monopoly on!
Monopoly might just be one of the most recognizable board games in the country. And no matter which version of the game you have played, there is always something about it that calls to mind the original. But now, it looks like Hasbro has decided to change things up a bit with their latest version of the classic quest for riches.
According to CNN, the newest version will be called Ms. Monopoly and it really will be a more female-focused version of the game. Not only is our usual fearless leader Mr. Monopoly taking a bit of a break this time around to let his niece fill his shoes, but everything from the board itself to the rules of play is all about women’s empowerment.
In this new version of the game, women are at an advantage. And the board reflects that.
Not only are all of the spaces up for sale inventions by women, but female players also get more money. That’s right, this time around it actually pays to be a woman!
During game play, whenever a woman passes Go, she will collect $240, whereas men will still get the standard rate of pay at $200. And even at the beginning of the game when money is initially handed out, it appears as if women will also be given a bit more to start with as well.
In this case, it seems that Hasbro is looking to give women the sort of advantage that usually only men get (in real life that is). Although the company does believe that men can still make up for the fact that they are not getting the same amount of money as the women just by “playing their cards right.”
Clearly there are some interesting differences between Ms. Monopoly and the classic version of the game, but there are a few things that will remain the same. This includes the Chance Cards, Luxury Taxes, and of course, Jail.
It really feels like Hasbro decided that it was time to make a statement with this new twist on the classic game, and I can’t help but think what they are doing is amazing. They are making a point without ever really having to say anything. And the fact that they are doing with a competitive game, just seems to drive the point home even more.
In real life, women are often paid less than their male counterparts, particularly in competitive industries. And flipping that scenario on its head using a game makes the sort of bold statement that even well-crafted essays and speeches may be unable to.
Pre-orders for this version of the game begin on Sept. 10, and while we imagine there will inevitably be some issues with this particular take on the game, we have to admit to being excited to actually play a female-centric Monopoly.
