Before there was Olivia Rodrigo, there was Avril Lavigne. And while the pop-punk princess released her seventh studio album, Love Sucks, back in February of this year, her debut album just celebrated its twentieth anniversary. On June 4, 2002, Let Go was released and became her highest-selling album. Here’s a look back at the album.

Not only was her debut release certified seven-times Platinum in the United States, but it also became the best-selling album of the 21st century by a Canadian artist. Lavigne was only 17 years at the time of its release. While much of her lyrics were garnered toward a teen audience, think “Sk8er Boi”, the overall appeal of her music and artistry gave her multi-generational success.
Even though it is her only album to have multiple top ten hits, it was the start of the recognition and fame she has today. Her singles, “Complicated,” “Sk8er Boi”, “I’m With You,” and “Losing Grip” are still celebrated to this day. At the time, they also propelled her to receive eight Grammy Award nominations. Lavigne received Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance nominations. While the albums and singles did not win any of the categories, their place in music pushed for the album to be re-released on June 3, 2022. In the new release, the 13 original tracks are remastered, with six bonus tracks included.
The album has been certified seven times platinum and has sold over 16 million copies worldwide. Apart from her latest album. Her legacy lives on through her influence on artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Fefe Dobson, Hayley Williams, Lilix, and Skye Sweetan.
