27 best movie musicals of all-time: Hamilton, Wizard of Oz and more
Best movie musicals: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street might be a musical, but it is also a horror movie. And perhaps it is this juxtaposition that really makes it an impressive piece of work. This isn’t your usual musical in any way, and that adds to its overall appeal.
I also have to give a lot of credit to Tim Burton on this one because he always seems to know what he is doing when it comes to casting. After all, this musical features Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and even Alan Rickman. This cast alone is enough to make us want to watch this musical on repeat.
And we can’t forget the music aspect of this movie (of course), as there as some amazing moments that revolve around the different songs. From “Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir” to “Not While I’M Around,” every song works perfectly to move the story forward and also finds a way to stick with you long after the movie is done.
There is something about a man tortured by his past, who wants revenge, and yet still feels sadness and pain that makes a character just as much a villain, as he is a sympathetic individual. And yet by the end, it is hard to feel sympathy for this man who is so blinded by his rage and need for revenge that he doesn’t even recognize his own wife and daughter.
While I would normally say this musical would be farther down the list, I have watched it so many times recently and found new things to appreciate every time. And for me, when you can find new things to enjoy about a musical or really any movie, then it deserves a chance to shine.
