Best movie musicals: Moulin Rouge!

Perhaps the beauty of Moulin Rouge! is the fact that it stars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in a fantastical story set in 1899 Paris. We are talking about a Cabaret dancer and a poet falling in love, and while that may seem romantic, there is so much more to the story than this.

In fact, this is a dramatic romance with a wedding planned for the Cabaret dancer and a Duke, a forbidden love story, and of course a secret. (Actually, there seem to be quite a few secrets here.)

Ultimately, this is not a musical with a happy ending, but instead one of love and loss. And yet, there is a lot of magic to this particular film, with much of it coming from the performances themselves. In fact, it would be hard to not include this musical when you think that it was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, and it actually won two.

While some people may not love this particular story or musical, it is still worthy of attention and being watched for those of us who love musicals.

Not only does it have some impressive songs and vocals, but the one moment that seems to stand out above the others is when our leading couple sings “Come What May” together on the stage of the Moulin Rouge. Not only is it beautiful, but it is also quite heartbreaking.

Also, can I just point out that this was our chance to see Ewan McGregor sing and dance? As a fan of his, this is definitely something I can appreciate. (And knowing he was once part of a movie musical and not just part of Star Wars is always something I like to pull out on trivia night.)
