4. The Crown

Seasons: 4 seasons

Short Sell: Following the life, love, and rivalries of the royal family, much of the series focuses on the Queen herself, although there is so much more to the story. After all, this is about the whole family. The Crown is truly an overarching period drama, one that even covers the same time period as what we watched in The Queen’s Gambit.

With a new season currently getting people talking, it just makes sense that this would be a nice alternative for those of us who have finished The Queen’s Gambit and are looking for more period drama.

Netflix describes: “This drama follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.”

3. The English Game

Seasons: 1 season

Short Sell: If you are looking for another period drama about a competitive game, then look no further than The English Game. Released in March 2020, this series focuses on the creation of football (soccer for those of us in the U.S.).

With The English Game, we get drama, sport, and another look at a historical time period. It is everything we got in The Queen’s Gambit, but perhaps a bit dirtier.

Netflix describes: “Two 19th-century footballers on opposite sides of a class divide navigate professional and personal turmoil to change the game — and England — forever.”
