20. Steppenwolf

Sadly, even though many of us were excited for Justice League, a lot of us were left rather disappointed. And one of the big reasons for this is the villain of the movie. Of all the DC villains, Steppenwolf is one of our least favorites, and that is saying something when we consider some of the issues other villains have dealt with.

The biggest problem with Steppenwolf is the fact that he feels rather generic. Sure, Wonder Woman tells a bit of his back story to Batman, but the reality is that he still doesn’t feel developed enough to matter. And not just that, but his arrival at the end of the movie feels like he is popping in for afternoon tea for a bit rather than actually here to destroy the world.

Too much of the movie was dedicated to all the heroes (which we weren’t necessarily mad at), and not enough was given to develop the villain they were trying to defeat. It felt like he was just a prop to bring the team together. And honestly, he was.

Steppenwolf has no motivations for his villainy and some of the best villains have motivations. There are things in their past that fuel their bad behavior. In the case of the Justice League‘s villain, all we know is he wants to destroy the world but have no clue why or what he gets out of it.

Perhaps if they had given him 10 more minutes of a storyline, we would care that he has arrived to take on the world. But, that’s not what happens and we are left not caring about him or his villainy. Ultimately, this leaves Steppenwolf as one of our least favorite villain of the DCEU.
