In Avengers: Infinity War, fans saw Loki meet another untimely death literally at the hands of Thanos. What happens to him in Avengers: Endgame?
Warning: This post contains major spoilers about Avengers: Endgame. We’re breaking it all down!
It’s been a whole year that Loki fans have had to wait to find out what happens to the God of Mischief after he seemingly met his demise in Avengers: Infinity War. And while the Russo brothers were adamant that Thanos indeed killed Loki and that he was seriously dead this time, we still carried a healthy sense of skepticism with us.
So, what happened to Loki in Avengers: Endgame?
The plain answer is that he, in fact, stayed dead. And just as Thanos said, “No resurrections.”
While the Avengers were successful in undoing the snap, anyone who was killed outside of the snappening did not come back to life (including Asgard’s very own Heimdall).
But, you can hold your tears (for now). That didn’t mean Loki didn’t appear in Endgame. He actually had cameos in a few scenes while the Avengers were on the hunt for the Infinity Stones.
In a smaller scene, Thor and Rocket return to the Thor: The Dark World timeline to get the Reality Stone out of the Aether. In order to do that, they have to sneak past Loki’s cell where he stayed locked up before the Dark Elves attacked the palace. That scene was laugh-worthy, but not as hilarious as when the Avengers go back to the Battle of New York and encounter Loki there.
In 2012 New York City, we quite literally get a behind the scenes look at the events following Avengers. As Iron Man hides behind a wall to watch the end scene from Avengers take place, we hear Loki say his final line where he asks for a drink. But after that, we get a few funny scenes from him — one of those being him shapeshifting into Captain America and mocking the Star Spangled Man the way he did in The Dark World.
While still at Avengers Tower, Loki also ends up thwarting the current-day Avengers’ plan when he ends up grabbing the Tesseract that Iron Man was supposed to steal. With the Tesseract in hand, the muzzled Loki opens a space portal and just hops right in to places unknown.
That last action opens up a lot of questions about what happens to Loki now that (in an alternate timeline), he escaped from being imprisoned by his father. Does this mean Loki still gets to live on in another timeline?
Techinically, it was Captain America’s duty to replace all the Infinity Stones back to their original timeline once the plan was complete, so that they did not disturb the order of events in time and space. That likely means that the events in Avengers still happened as planned once again, and there’s no space bandit Loki out there finding different ways to use the Tesseract.
That would have opened up a load of possibilities for his Disney+ show. But it now looks like the timeline for his show will take place in the past. The show is still confirmed to have Tom Hiddleston star as Loki, but it’s up for debate whether it will be him playing Loki throughout the whole show, or if there will be an even younger version of Loki that’s played by a different actor. The show will reportedly be about Loki causing mischief throughout history, so either of those scenarios is possible.
It may have been an emotional run for Loki fans, but most all of the original heroes have closed out this chapter of the MCU — whether dead or alive. It’s been an emotionally touching ride, but thank goodness for Disney+ because it’s not over just yet.
