A Cinderella Story

Although there have been a few different A Cinderella Story movies released, I admit I am a fan of the original from 2004. Thanks to Hillary Duff, Chad Michael Murray, Regina King, and Jennifer Coolidge, Cinderella got a modern update that includes a diner, high school, and a dream.

When it was first released, it was a fresh take on the classic story of Cinderella. There was something charming about Duff and Murray’s star-crossed romance. Samantha (the movie’s version of Cinderella) doesn’t really need a boy to make her life happy, which also gives the story the fresh twist it needs to remind us that while this may be A Cinderella Story, our heroine is no fairytale princess.

At the same time, while Samantha may not need a guy to make her happy and whole, there’s still something about the romance in this movie that not only makes us smile, but also draws us in to a point that we believe their story could happen. We want to see more of Austin and Sam together, and of course the masked scene at the school dance was the stuff of our high school fantasies.

Perhaps the thing that makes this one of our favorite rom-coms on Netflix is the fact that it takes the classic story and gives it a modern twist that still feels timeless. Even now, I can turn this movie on and fall into the story. In fact, it makes me want to go back to high school (and I never feel that way) and try for my own Cinderella story.
