4 things we learned (and one question we have) from Solo: A Star Wars Story official trailer

Solo: A Star Wars Story dropped its first official trailer on Sunday night during American Idol, and we learned a few things about the next Star Wars film.

With Solo: A Star Wars Story hitting theaters in just several weeks (that will likely fly by), Lucasfilm is finally turning their attention away from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Of course, it seems a little late to start promoting this film, but it’s not like anybody’s been foaming at the mouth to talk about Solo anyway.

Unfortunately, Lucasfilm finds themselves in a weird place right now. If you really compare the numbers of The Last Jedi to The Force Awakens, Rogue One and something more recent like Black Panther, The Last Jedi doesn’t hold up. And with all the behind-the-scenes stuff still looming over Solo, it’s hard to get excited.

However, the new trailer did give us a good amount of information. Let’s check it out before we dive in.

Chewbacca is more than 190 years old

Sure, we all know he’s old. We all know he’s not even the oldest character in Star Wars. And while we saw him in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, many moviegoers didn’t really have an exact age until this trailer.

Plus, this takes place before the original trilogy. And the original trilogy takes place about 30 years before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So, yeah, he is really old. More importantly, he does, in fact, look really great nowadays.

It was love at first sight between Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon

Before we even got a glimpse of any footage, we knew a portion of the film would center around the Millennium Falcon. But what we didn’t know was that Han Solo considered himself a “driver” before he was a “flyer.”

So, the grumpy guy who wanted everyone to know about the Kessel Run didn’t even originate as a flyer. Piloting wasn’t something that was in his veins, which makes even more sense when you realize this is the guy who never wanted to know the odds.

Apparently, all it took was one look at the Falcon and he changed his tune.

This movie doesn’t need Emilia Clarke, especially not as a love interest

Obviously, Emilia Clarke gets a lot of name recognition for Game of Thrones. But aside from the HBO show, her other roles don’t carry the same esteem. From the looks of this trailer, that’s not suddenly going to change because of this film either.

While we’re used to seeing every single film with some sort of romantic interest one way or another, this trailer wouldn’t have changed if Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra wasn’t included at all. Although she can be considered the female protagonist, this trailer didn’t make her role feel substantial. (What a surprise.)

Alden Ehrenreich probably won’t ever feel like Han Solo

The first teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story lacked a lot of Alden Ehrenreich, which led some people to speculate that Lucasfilm wanted to hide him from the backlash. Since they’ve been aware of the problem for quite some time, it made sense.

However, the official trailer gives us a plenty of Ehrenreich, and unfortunately, that’s not really a good thing. The hair is still wrong. His voice is weird. And, oh yeah, he’s not Harrison Ford. And is that something we can get over, really? For an unnecessary prequel film? Not really.

Question: If Paul Bettany is the “gangster” of the film and one of the antagonists, why wasn’t he added until Ron Howard joined the project?

Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired, and we’ll never truly know what happened behind the scenes. But once Lucasfilm dismissed them, Kathleen Kennedy brought Ron Howard aboard. In good spirit, Howard did a lot to promote the film and made noble efforts to keep people calm. Then, he brought his friend Paul Bettany aboard.

At that point, we speculated as to whether Bettany replaced Michael K. Williams, but that still wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

Basically, who was the original antagonist of the film? And how much did Ron Howard change when he took over as the director?
