Game of Thrones season 7: Let’s speculate about those episode titles
Season 7 of Game of Thrones now has three named episodes, and while their meanings might seem obvious, there could be a deeper interpretation at hand.
Game of Thrones fans have just more than a week before they can finally, finally see season 7 premiere on July 16. And rather than hold everything back, HBO has flat-out dropped a little more information for us all to enjoy, a la the June release of a new trailer.
We tip our hats to Entertainment Weekly for posting all three of the following titles and accompanying descriptions.
Let’s start with “Dragonstone,” which will be the season premiere:
"“Jon (Kit Harington) organizes the defense of the North. Cersei (Lena Headey) tries to even the odds. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) comes home.”"
As EW notes, that means that Daenerys will effectively start the season already close to Westeros. She was born on Dragonstone, which means that it’s not just a homecoming to her kingdom, but to her very birthplace.
As for Cersei evening the odds, could this refer to her looking for allies among, say, Euron Greyjoy? That’s based both on spoiler knowledge as well as practical assessment. Since Yara and Theon have joined Daenerys’ alliance, Cersei will need some sort of seafaring ally of her own as a counter. Euron’s the obvious choice, even if he does claim to be the king of the Iron Islands. That’s something Cersei probably won’t take too kindly to, but beggars can’t be choosers.
Meanwhile, Jon Snow sounds like he won’t go south just yet. However, the wording suggests that the spoiler about some timing might still come true.
On to episode 2, “Stormborn” (another Daenerys reference!):
"“Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) receives an unexpected visitor. Jon (Kit Harington) faces a revolt. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) plans the conquest of Westeros.”"
EW asks about the Jon description here, but doesn’t answer the question. Let’s give it a shot, shall we?
“Revolt” is a very interesting choice of words, because it seems to imply that it’s more than just the tension we expect to see between Jon and his believed half-sister, Sansa. The key word there, though, is seems. Perhaps Sansa throws her hands up and delivers an ultimatum to him? That’s close enough to a revolt.
EW also asks who Dany’s “unexpected visitor” is. Spoilers seem to suggest a name, but that’s a touch too early based on the most current reports. Then again, we could very well be wrong. She does already have other allies in the Seven Kingdoms, like Olenna Tyrell and Ellaria Sand.
Finally, episode 3 is “The Queen’s Justice,” perhaps the most interesting title because it’s ambiguous. There are two queens at the moment, three if you count Sansa as an unofficial queen in the North as we do around here because Sansa Stark is amazing. But only the two official queens, Cersei and Daenerys, merit mentions.
"“Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) holds court. Cersei (Lena Headey) returns a gift. Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) learns from his mistakes.”"
If Jaime’s educational mistake is not “being in a damaging relationship with Cersei” for the better part of his life, then I don’t know what to tell you. Previous interviews with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau have suggested that the Lannister twins’ relationship is going to evolve, and Lena Headey has also alluded to some changes in a recent interview as well.
Next: Is there a spoiler in this GoT featurette?
With episode descriptions now out in the wild, it’s hard not to expect that additional episodic photos may also arrive sooner rather than later — and probably without warning.
