Each year, you might write up a list of New Year's resolutions. You're excited for a fresh year and can't wait to make some much-needed changes. Maybe you're aiming to exercise more, eat healthier food, or wake up earlier. However, once the second or third week of January rolls around, you start missing a few goals.
The slide is gradual. First, you miss a morning gym class. Then, you skip another workout to spend time with friends. Before you know it, you're spending your evenings on the couch with a tub of Rocky Road ice cream.
If this sounds like you, don't fret. There are ways you can get back on track and reach your goals. Here are five tricks for sticking to your New Year's resolutions.
Create a vision board
A vision board is a great way to visualize your goals and stay motivated. Get a presentation board and post photos of where you would like to see yourself in the future. It could be a picture of you at your goal weight or an image of an outfit you want to wear, for example.
Start slow
Take your time when starting with a new goal. Instead of pushing yourself to exercise five days a week, start with just one or two days a week. As you build up toward your goal, you'll gain more confidence.
Overdoing it when it comes to your New Year's resolutions could set you back. Focus on taking small steps so that you can reach your goal. Do things at your own pace.
Track your progress
Keep track of how you're doing with your resolutions. You can do this by keeping a journal or creating a log. Seeing your progress will motivate you to keep going. You might not feel like you're getting anywhere, but each step forward is a reason to celebrate.
Get an accountability partner
Telling someone about your resolutions will give you an incentive to stay the course. You can even have weekly check-ins. Make it fun by meeting up for coffee or a fun activity of your choice. There's nothing like having a friend on the sidelines cheering you on.
Reward yourself
It's a great feeling when you reach targets you've set for yourself. Take this time to pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Treat yourself to that sweater you've been eyeing or allow yourself to have a diet cheat day. Rewards are another way to stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize.
