The Last Thing He Told Me made a splash when it premiered on Apple TV+ in 2023. Originally viewed as a limited series to match the novel of the same name by author Laura Dave, the series is getting an unexpected second season.

Season two will be based on the forthcoming sequel novel written by Laura Dave, which is expected to release in 2025, before the show's second season airs. Original series stars Jennifer Garner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Angourie Rice, and David Morse will be returning for the second installment of the story.

The original finale concluded the mystery surrounding the truth behind Hannah's husband's mysterious disappearance. The show portrayed the unlikely team-up of the estranged step-mother and step-daughter as Hannah and Bailey had no one but each other to rely on in trying to unravel the truth behind what had really happened to Owen.

While there was a potential tease for more after Hannah and Owen's very short-lived reunion after the time jump, it was never expected that the series would continue, and instead, leaving Own separated from Hannah and Bailey, who had grown very close in his absence, was a sad conclusion that still fit into the overall narrative of the show.

There are certainly questions surrounding where the story will pick up from, such as if it takes place before the time jump, or after, and how that choice would ultimately play a role in impacting the dynamic between Hannah and Bailey.

If the series picks up from where the time jump left off, that creates the possibility of seeing how a more adult relationship between Hannah and Bailey plays out, rather than portraying their dynamic as an overwhelmed adult and angsty teenager.

The change in dynamic, allowing the two leads to already start the story on the same page, would expand the world and their relationship by creating a new sense of insight into how they work as a united team, rather than creating a bond through conflict.

Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine team remains a steady force behind the show's upcoming second season.
