All American Throws Spencer And Olivia Through An Unnecessary Checklist of Bad Omens
Is it really a wedding on a TV drama if everything goes perfectly according to plan? While most fans are used to potential obstacles that could hinder the wedding ceremony, All American's "I Do (Part 1)" feels more like it followed a checklist of bad omens rather than an organic scenario that could have made the lead up to Spencer and Olivia's wedding more dramatic, not that it actually needed the added drama.
After all Olivia and Spencer have been through, individually and as a couple, they deserved a celebratory few days leading up to their wedding ceremony. Instead, "I Do (Part 1)" goes through the motions of supplying the duo with bad luck, such as breaking a mirror, Spencer seeing Olivia in her wedding dress, various people stuck because their planes were canceled due to weather, Olivia losing her engagement ring, and many more.
"Victory Lap" featured a bad luck moment for Layla and Jordan as well when they saw each other the morning before their ceremony. But, in that case, the episode kept it to this one instance and then moved on. In "I Do (Part 1)," it is a constant reference to bad luck, and of course, even the episode's concluding minutes give one final gut punch. Spencer and Olivia's wedding venue is ruined.
The biggest problem here is that it does not feel like any of these problems are natural and that they are more so created with the specific intent of making Olivia and Spencer's upcoming wedding as complicated as possible. More likely than not, the final ceremony will be beautiful regardless, but putting this duo through the wringer before they walk down the aisle will not add an extra layer of relief that they finally got here.
With only one episode left in the season and the knowledge that Daniel Ezra is leaving as a series regular following the finale, it is inevitable that Spencer and Olivia's marriage will happen. While All American may be going for the idea that whatever their last-minute ceremony turns into is even more fantastic than what they imagined because of the heart all their friends and family put into it, there really was no reason to have to make this so complicated.
Otherwise, the other major plot occurring follows Jordan's struggle to accept a job working as a Quarterback Coach at South Crenshaw High School. It would have Jordan step into his father's legacy even more, and rather than turning that into a personal question for Jordan regarding if he can make a name for himself outside of his father's legacy, All American makes it more about if Jordan feels he is comfortable stepping into Billy's old office.
Although All American's dedication to pushing the narrative forward is noticeable as the timeline jumps another five months, so are all the slight plot holes that exist within that narrative.
For Spencer and Olivia's storyline, five months makes sense. It takes time to plan a wedding and Olivia needed the ability to prepare to move to New York. But, for Jordan and Layla, who have now been married for a year and three months, this time jump only adds confusion. Before they got married, Layla and Jordan discussed finding their own place and Layla suggesting she had already began to find places Jordan might like.
If the reason they were holding back came from uncertainty regarding Jordan's professional future, that would make sense. Except, the duo made an offer on a house they ultimately chose against moving forward with before Jordan had a job solidified.
Layla and Jordan's quest for a home will likely be completed in the season finale as the show prepares for whatever its next phase is in season seven. But, Jordan and Layla's continued search for their own home is not the only questionable element to this episode.
Although All American may have barely just saved itself by having Olivia reference that Patience was catching a later flight from New York, there are absolutely no references to Jaymee and AJ, even though Asher appears various times. Grace's husband, D'Angelo, is also absent, with only Dillon's inability to appear at the rehearsal dinner given an explanation.
Instead, Preach and his daughter Amina's presence suggest that they may be a larger part of whatever comes in season seven, especially with All American's plan to give Jordan a job at South Crenshaw High School as well.
As All American heads into its season finale and lays the seeds for what may come next, the biggest question still stands as to how Spencer and Olivia's wedding will turn out.
