All American Begins To Tie Up Loose Ends In Preparation For The Final Episodes of Season 6
As All American prepares to air the final group of episodes in season six, "The Next Episode" works to begin the process of bringing closure to certain storylines or working toward a certain wedding fans have been excitedly waiting for.
Patience has had a backseat to her own storyline all season as she has waited for the trial to finally put Miko in jail for stalking and assault. Most of the time, Patience has been seen obsessing over Miko's moves or feeling trapped in limbo. But, "The Next Episode" finally allows her to move on with the arrival of Miko's trial and how things come to a quick but fairly anti-climactic end.
If All American had wanted to dive deeper into the drama, the series would have eventually brought Patience into the courtroom to face off against Miko one last time in person. Instead, "The Next Episode" chooses to get the trial dealt with without seeing Miko in court at all. Rather than actually show the trial, it is discussed and referenced by Laura and Coop. But, Coop refuses to be a bystander as Patience overwhelms herself with worries and concerns about if Miko will walk away, and what that means for Patience's future.
Even after she was told to support Patience as her girlfriend, not a lawyer, Coop can not help but be inspired with a game-winning move after hearing Spencer and Preach argue over Shakespeare characters. Coop's arrival at the courthouse alongside the "boyfriend" of Miko's previous victim who would be more than happy to speak out against Miko, results in Miko taking the plea deal that lands her in jail.
Coop's trick with the fake boyfriend could have definitely backfired on her had the opposition made any other choice. But, as it stood, Coop's bluff was legal and worked in her and Patience's favor. Since Patience's main story has entirely surrounded the fallout of Miko's trial, All American can go back to focussing on Patience's music career.
The decision to have the trial dealt with before the finale works in favor of the other forefront plot lines in the series, and "The Next Episode" prepares audiences for those as well, including Jordan and Layla finally choosing a wedding date.
For a while, it seemed like this wedding would not be happening in season six, and the reasons were perfectly valid surrounding Layla's mental health journey. However, when Layla and Jordan individually receive news that their wedding venue has opened up and given them a spot, neither is quick to jump at the chance.
Instead, somehow, neither is aware of the possibility that if both of their emails were placed down for this venue, that they both would have gotten a notification. Therefore, "The Next Episode" is able to play into the discomfort of Jordan and Layla beating around the subject, trying to figure out how to bring it up, or if it is better left unspoken.
This storyline also places Spencer and Olivia in comical roles as they work together to try and force Layla and Jordan to talk about the wedding venue. Olivia and Spencer's actions of helping Jordan and Layla talk out their feelings before confronting each other, then tricking them into discussing it, works out in the long run.
Ultimately, Layla finds herself in a very good place mentally and emotionally, and is more than ready to take the leap and marry Jordan. Their decision comes from a season of ups, downs, and mutual support as they have worked through every obstacle thrown their way before coming up with the mutual decision together that they are both wanting and ready to get married.
Layla and Jordan's wedding has been one of the biggest topics of season six, and with the decision to have them finally determine a wedding date and moving forward with the ceremony, it sets the story in place to conclude the season with the duo finally married.
With the storylines surrounding Patience being able to move on from Miko, and Jordan and Layla's wedding given closure and being pushed ahead respectively, All American is ready to deliver a strong group of episodes to close out season six.
