The CW cancels Dynasty after five seasons
The Carringtons’ and the Colbys’ feuds will finally end. The CW soap, Dynasty, has been officially canceled by the network after five seasons.
The decision was made partly due to Dynasty suffering in the weekly ratings, averaging just 410,000 viewers and grabbing a 0.1 demo. Unfortunately, Dynasty was not the only CW show who met cancellation on Thursday. 4400, Legacies, Naomi, In the Dark, and Roswell New Mexico was also axed, leaving fans disheartened and disappointed.
TvLine reported that Nexstar’s rumored acquisition of the CW Network also may have played a part in the brutal canceling “bloodbath.”, as the network is currently up for grabs in the market.
In the reboot, and much like its 1980s inspiration, Dynasty followed two billionaire families living in Atlanta-the Carringtons and the Colbys-and their constant embattlement. Elizabeth Gillies starred as Fallon, the businesswoman, and daughter of Blake Carrington (Grant Show), owner of the Carrington Atlantic enterprise. Her business partner, Jeff Colby, is revealed to be Blake’s nephew, which causes more intense affairs between the families.
The families on edge storylines are the only thing that remained true to the original series as themes were updated to fit modern times. One such example is the acceptance of having a gay child as Blake does with Steven (James Mackay) and the shift from Denver to Atlanta.
A notable star of the soap included Desperate Housewives alum Nicollete Sheridan, who portrayed the snooty Alexis Carrington-Colby in the first two seasons. Elaine Hendrix took over the character in the third season and remained a permanent fixture.
Gillies took to her Instagram following the news and stated that she’s “saving the goodbyes for a later post” and is alongside her TV husband and co-star, Sam Underwood.
The fifth season debuted in December 2021, and the last episode will serve as the series finale.
