Would Elizabeth Olsen do a solo Scarlet Witch film?
When Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is released this weekend, Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch) star Elizabeth Olsen will make her fifth film appearance as the character, the first since Wanda resurfaced in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Since then, Olsen starred in the critically-acclaimed Disney+ limited series WandaVision — and received an Emmy nomination — that lasted for six episodes and was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to debut on the streaming service. Despite the character’s multiple MCU appearances, she always played a supporting role in the stories and wasn’t given a star vehicle until WandaVision. Many fans have been wondering when and if there will be a solo Scarlet Witch film, and Olsen herself has provided her thoughts on the topic.
What Does Olsen think about a solo Scarlet Witch film?
In a recent interview with On Demand Entertainment, Olsen said that she honestly didn’t know if a solo Scarlet Witch film was planned. However, she admitted that she would willingly sign on for such a film if there was a “good story to tell,” and only if there was “some version of a break” in between. Because Olsen’s contract with Disney is not a multi-picture one, she may or may not appear in future MCU fare. However, in March, a rumor was circulating that Olsen had extended her contract for seven years, which bodes well for her future. After Wanda was dusted in Avengers: Infinity War, Olsen didn’t know if she’d be appearing in further projects, so when further appearances were announced, she was pleasantly surprised and happy to “rediscover” Wanda as a person.
Could a solo film happen?
There has only been two solo, female-led films in the MCU thus far: 2019’s Captain Marvel and last year’s Black Widow, the latter of which features a character whose solo project was long-delayed and anticipated. Despite taking place in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Widow was released two years after Scarlett Johansson’s character’s death in Avengers: Endgame and acts as a sort of eulogy for the character.
If a Scarlet Witch film is planned, it’s understandable that Olsen would need a break, as she almost immediately filmed the Doctor Strange sequel after completing WandaVision. She completed filming last June, then returned for reshoots, which she wrapped in September. Olsen has been playing Wanda for nearly a decade, and, as we’ve come to see, Wanda is a very complex character that demands a huge physical and emotional commitment from Olsen. There will continue to be speculation regarding possible Scarlet Witch spin-offs until they are either confirmed or denied, and MCU fans are surely hoping it is the former. Initial reactions for Doctor Strange 2 have now been released, and Olsen’s performance is being praised, in particular.
All episodes of WandaVision are available to stream on Disney+, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theatres only this Friday, May 6, 2022.
