Good Trouble: Is Mariana a good spy? + a surprise cameo
Mariana’s work as a spy for Bulk Beauty has overwhelmed her the longer she stays at Revitalize Beauty. Her mission has been to prove that Jackie stole Bulk Beauty’s code. Although Jackie did steal the code, Jackie and the women at Revitalize Beauty had changed the code just enough that it would likely not hold up as having been initially stolen from Bulk Beauty.
She has been working in the shadows, feeding her friends at Bulk Beauty information about the companies Revitalize Beauty has been targeting so that Bulk Beauty can reach them first. Unfortunately, it does not always work in her favor. When being closely watched, she has had to step up using her selling skills to gain Revitalize Beauty a win against Bulk Beauty to avoid blowing her cover.
However, one of the most significant complications Mariana has been facing is the non-compete agreement she signed as a new hire at Revitalize Beauty. The agreement prevents her from working at another similar company for two years if this job does not work out. So, she has been contractually obligated to stick around. At least, that is what she believes.
After admitting the truth to Evan, he reveals to has no intentions of telling Jackie the truth about Mariana’s plans. However, he does have an idea to help her. If Evan buys Revitalize Beauty, the two beauty companies can merge, and Mariana can continue working with everyone without having an issue with her non-compete agreement.
Still, she is skeptical even though her Bulk Beauty friends agree with Evan’s idea. Mariana, nor her friends, genuinely want to work for Evan again. But, her friends have agreed to the opportunity leaving Mariana uncertain of what to do next. However, that is not the only complicated thing she is dealing with.
Since Callie left California for Washington D.C, Mariana avoided Callie’s calls. But, learning that the new Coterie member, Joaquin, has not heard from his sister in eight years may have inspired her to move beyond her anger.
Mariana video calls Callie, and she responds, prompting an exciting and surprising cameo from Maia Mitchell. Their conversation includes things Mariana needed to get off her chest, such as her anger toward Callie for leaving and doing it with such short notice to the opposite side of the country.
Although Callie’s appearance gives the sisters a chance to reconnect, including revealing Callie misses Mariana as well, Callie’s appearance is more than just a scene discussing how much the two miss each other. It also involves Callie telling Mariana the information she needs to move forward in her career. As it turns out, a non-compete agreement is not enforceable in the state of California, meaning that although Mariana signed the contract, she is free from it.
So, what does this mean for Mariana’s future with Revitalize Beauty or Bulk Beauty? Since the non-compete agreement is no longer such a critical factor in her decisions, she has more freedom to make a choice.
Good Trouble thrives in creating complicated situations for its main characters to handle. Although this would not be the first work-related conflict she has faced, it certainly has the potential to blow up in her face later on, even if Callie’s appearance allowed a reprieve from the stress of the contract.
Still, there is suspicion that Jackie is not entirely convinced of Mariana’s loyalty to Revitalize Beauty. However, since Jackie could be a villain to both Bulk Beauty and Revitalize Beauty, perhaps that could turn the tide.
Could Revitalize Beauty and Bulk Beauty team up against Jackie? Only time will tell to see how everything unravels for the two competing beauty companies and what that will mean for Mariana and her professional future.
