Katy Keene deserved better from The CW

When it was first announced that Riverdale was getting a spin-off series, there was both excitement and trepidation. For many people, Katy Keene was an unknown quantity. If you weren’t a fan of the Archie comics before watching Riverdale, you may not even have heard of Katy and her friends.

To make magic happen, Riverdale needed to find a way to truly connect the two shows, and they did it multiple ways. But even with Josie McCoy heading off to New York City for her big break, joining the Katy Keene spin-off, and grounding it in The CW’s spin on the Archie-verse, things didn’t work for the show.

While much of the blame for the show’s demise rests on the COVID-19 pandemic, the fact is that the show never got off the ground the way a show like Nancy Drew or even In the Dark were able to. But then again, with only 13 episodes to prove why Riverdale fans (and other viewers) should tune in, it seems like they didn’t necessarily get the chance to shine.

Sure, there are plenty of shows where 13 episodes are enough, but as a successor to the ridiculousness that is Riverdale, that just doesn’t seem like nearly enough to build up a faithful audience.

Katy Keene deserved a second season from The CW

Katy Keene had so much potential to give us new drama outside of the Riverdale fold, while still giving us bits of pieces of that world. And with Hiram Lodge of all people showing up at the end of the first season, it left us with an epic cliffhanger that is hard to forget.

Once again, a cast of diverse characters with multiple female leads was just not given the chance to shine the way they deserved and it is sad because we continually hope for the best when shows like this turn up on TV. With the CW we know we are more likely to get renewals for shows that other networks wouldn’t give the time of day to, but at the same time, it is almost like they only care about certain projects, and the others left to fend for themselves, scratching and clawing until they can prove they are worth the network’s time. Too bad Katy Keene wasn’t given that opportunity.

We may blame the pandemic for this cancellation, but it sure doesn’t seem like The CW fought for the show either.
