Riverdale is in the Twilight Zone for their five episode Rivervale event
It was Twilight Zone vibes as we kicked off Season 6 of Riverdale with their Rivervale five-episode event. And honestly, this was a ridiculous but fun ride the entire time.
If you go into watching an episode of Riverdale by expecting ridiculousness, you will never be disappointed. It truly does live up to its heritage as a series based on a comic book series (which is something I think we often forget). For Season 6, it is clear that they are truly leaning into not only the ridiculous but also the comics, as well as some horror tropes.
The entire Season 6 premiere was everything we could have hoped for and more in a show that never takes itself too seriously. Considering Jughead has been the narrator of the series since the very beginning, it made sense for him to take on a Rod Serling-type role to narrate the Rivervale event. And he did it in a way that drew us in and left us convinced that maybe Riverdale has fallen into the Twilight Zone.
Riverdale leans into Twilight Zone theme for Rivervale event
There were some true shocks in this episode, including a surprise death that we can’t get over. Seriously, Cheryl took a knife to our leading man – Archie Andrews – and cut out his heart! Cue the dropped jaw and the “what in the Rivervale is this” memes.
Do we think Archie is dead for good? Not at all. This is Riverdale after all and the idea of losing Archie makes no sense. But that doesn’t mean he can’t be out of the picture through the Rivervale event.
Honestly, I have a theory about this Rivervale event and it has a lot to do with the final moments of Season 5 when Archie found the bomb under his bed as he is making out with Betty. And the big clue to this is the fact that Archie could hear the ticking of the bomb in his nightmare, which makes me think that perhaps he is in a coma somewhere or that this is all a nightmare of his based on the explosion.
Whether or not this theory is correct, I have no idea. But it is the only thing I can think of to account for the instances when Archie can hear random ticking and even the dream-like sequences he had throughout the episode.
A lot happened in the Season 6 premiere of Riverdale and it was exciting. It left me anxious for the next episode, which is something that has been missing for a little while when it comes to tuning in for episodes of Riverdale.
But what did you think of the first episode in the Rivervale event? And do you have a theory about Archie? We want to know what you thought!
