Best movie musicals: Pitch Perfect
A lot of talent was introduced to the world thanks to Pitch Perfect. And even if the actors and actresses who were part of this film had been working before this movie musical, once they showed off their ability to both act and sing, it feels like things really changed for some of these stars.
What makes Pitch Perfect a must-watch musical is the fact that it really gives a capella the spotlight it deserves. It takes a lot of work to create music without any type of instruments. And yet, that is exactly what this movie does – repeatedly.
Perhaps the greatest moment in the film is the riff-off, where we get to see the Bellas go up against the Treblemakers. While the sequels tried to capture the magic of this scene, the first time it happened on our screens, it was magic. Not only did it feel like it was an unscripted moment, but there was actual chemistry among the cast and singers, which helped to make the entire thing feel real and like the ultimate moment of nerdy goodness for singers.
While Pitch Perfect might not seem like a movie musical, it really does deliver on all the aspects we expect to find in these films. Not only is there plenty of singing, but there is a lesson or two and a sense of unity between the characters. All of which helps to make this a truly magical musical experience.
And of course, we can’t forget how great it was to really get to see Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson in action. Not only do they know how to sing, but they are hilarious, and that sold me on this film as a must-watch.
