Best movie musicals: Dreamgirls
Released in 2006, Dreamgirls is a remake of a musical that some people didn’t even know existed. And yet, bring together Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy, and suddenly the world knows the name.
There are a lot of reasons why Dreamgirls deserves praise and to be included in our list of top movie musicals, but perhaps one of the major reasons is Hudson’s performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Even if there had been no other music in the movie, this would have been enough to elevate the film to epic musical status thanks to the singer’s powerhouse vocals.
However, after 13 years, it is not “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” that so many people cover and remember, it is “Listen” by Beyonce which remains an iconic single that many artists have covered for themselves.
Honestly, the story itself is what drew me in, as it details the evolution of R&B from the 1960s and 70s. And at the heart of it all is a trio of women with vocal abilities that make them a star without even trying (although there is plenty of hard work and manipulation that happens). While the story itself is fictional, it still gives us a great look at what really did happen with Motown and R&B music during those years, and that is enough to make it a must-watch movie musical (at least once).
