Best movie musicals: In the Heights

The magic of In the Heights has a lot to do with Lin-Manuel Miranda and his ability to bring characters and neighborhoods to life. While the movie isn’t perfect, it is still so well done that it will leave you breathless in a lot of ways.

One of the things that really got to me with this musical is the look at Washington Heights, which immediately brings back some great memories of New York City. And that sense of nostalgia was enough to draw me in.

Beyond my own personal feelings about In the Heights, this musical is a beautiful look at people and how they bring life to a neighborhood. And how each of these people adds something special to the world around them.

In terms of the music, this is the kind of storytelling that resonates long after the credits roll. But really, we are here for songs like “In the Heights,” “When the Sun Goes Down,” and even “It Won’t Be Long Now.” Actually, every single one of these songs gets us going and leaves us coming back for more. (And yes, it has now been watched on repeat.)

This is a celebration of heritage and a neighborhood. It is a look at people, and it is a chance to see hard-working people being more than what we think. And that is magic.
