Best movie musicals: Mamma Mia!

Want a musical comedy that gives us all the magic of ABBA? Then look no further than Mamma Mia! and its sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. With both of these movies, we get a fun story, great music, and a stellar cast.

And while I really enjoyed the sequel, it is absolutely the first movie that draws us in. Not only does it give us a fun look at family, but it is a comical look at the possibilities of fatherhood.

When it comes to storylines, this one might actually be one of the more fascinating musicals because it is all about a young woman getting married who invites the three men who could potentially be her father to her wedding. It’s a look back at her mother’s life, as well as a journey of discovery for all involved. The fact that we also end up with a few different couples by the end of the story is an added bonus we aren’t sure we ever saw coming to begin with.

Obviously, the music is one of the more important aspects of a musical, and with this particular musical, it is definitely the work of ABBA that keeps us going (and coming back for more). Since we also sang “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen,” and “Take a Chance on Me” on repeat after watching the movie, it seems like it worked as more than just a device to keep the story moving, and we are here for that.
