Best movie musicals: Funny Girl

Funny Girl was Barbra Streisand’s film debut and if ever there was something to be thankful for it would be this. Not only did the world get the gift of Streisand, but she also acted alongside Omar Sharif, a legend in his own right.

The beauty of Funny Girl is not only did we get some amazing music, but we got to see Streisand bringing the magic of her talent to the screen. There is something magical about this musical for so many reasons. Not only does it have plenty of humor and class, but the music is amazing.

In fact, I would have to say that without Barbra Streisand, this movie wouldn’t be what it is. Her voice is perfection, her ability to steal a scene, even with Sharif in the picture is epic, and the storyline itself is amazing. The fact that it is based on the life of an actual Broadway star and comedian named Fanny Brice just makes it that much more impressive.

As a bonus, this movie was also an award winner in its own right, with Streisand winning the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Of all the songs that were performed in this movie, my all-time favorite is “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” I would even say that this song is a classic thanks to Streisand and her amazing vocals, as it is still covered today (Glee had Lea Michele sing this song in an episode).

Personally, I think more people need to see Funny Girl and appreciate the magic of this musical and the talent of a young Barbra Streisand. After all, this is what helped launch her into the stratosphere as a star.
