Best movie musicals: Chicago
When you have a musical that stars the likes of Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, you know you have a winner. And Chicago was definitely a winner, in fact, it won Best Picture at the 2003 Academy Awards, proving it was able to deliver everything viewers could have hoped for.
In this musical, we get a close look at what fame can do to a person, especially the desire to be on top. With two women fighting for the spotlight, we end up with murder, scandals, corruption, and of course plenty of music.
And what makes Chicago really stand out from the crowd is its music. There are so many good musical moments in this movie that it is hard to pick just one that stands out. And yet, if I had to choose a favorite it would have to be “Cell Block Tango” where we learn what each of the women in prison for murder are accused of doing.
Not only is this song perfect for explaining the back story of each character present, but it is the kind of earworm that sticks with you long after the movie is done. (In fact, even just writing about it has the song stuck in my head.)
This really is a larger-than-life musical, and one that stands the test of time well. I can’t resist watching Gere as a lawyer with a big personality, determined to win at all costs. And Zeta-Jones and Zellweger are amazing as two performers who can’t stand each other, but end up needing one another not only for their freedom but also for the fame they have literally killed for.
