There have been many musicals that have been transformed into movies. We look at the greatest movie musicals of all time.

Over the years, movie musicals have proven that they are actually quite timeless. From the classics like The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz to the more recent favorites, such as Grease and Into the Woods, there is something for everyone.

And while we typically think of live-action movies when thinking of musicals, there is something to be said for the magical animated movies that Disney releases, such as Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Of course, it certainly helps that the House of Mouse is now giving these movies new life as live-action offerings, which means they can easily be included in this list without any doubt to their worthiness.

Perhaps what makes movie musicals so special is the fact that they not only tell a beautiful story, but the music usually adds a twist to the way everything is delivered. Long after the movie is over, a good musical will have you singing the songs, humming to the beats, and even remembering those moments that popped with song. After all, you may not remember every detail about Chicago, but most of us remember the “Cell Block Tango.”

With so many movie musicals to love, it can be hard to rank them all, but here are 27 of our favorites. Both new and old, these are some of the best movie musicals ever made.
