What’s new in September for Xbox Live Gold members?
Xbox Live Gold subscribers have some better options for their four free games this month. What’s worth your time as we head into the fall season?
Xbox Live Gold’s August offerings were very weird compared to the prior summer months (and especially compared to the July offerings for PlayStation Plus members).
However, it seems like Microsoft is back on track for this month.
Below are the offerings for September, the systems they’re on, and the dates they’re available to download:
- Tom Clancy’s The Division, September 1-30 on Xbox One
- The Book of Unwritten Rules 2, September 16-October 15 on Xbox One
- de Blob 2, September 1-15 on Xbox 360 and Xbox One
- Armed and Dangerous, September 16-30 on Xbox 360 and Xbox One
Here’s the official announcement from Microsoft:
Cool! These are definitely better options than last month. So what’s worth your time to play in September?
The obvious highlight is The Division. Take back New York City in this thrilling combat game. The RPG customization is top-notch, and the co-op campaign is so massive that it’s almost a little overwhelming. The coolest (and creepiest) part of this game is the recreation of NYC and honestly makes you feel like you’re playing a Rockstar game. Definitely check this one out.

Next up is The Book of Unwritten Rules 2, a great point-and-click adventure follow up to the first game. It’s also really funny, so if you’re looking for a video game that’s also highly entertaining, check this one out. It’s a fun fantasy adventure, too and is a good lighthearted choice for this month.
de Blob 2 is another sequel offering this month. If you didn’t play the original, that’s okay. Play as Blob to save Prisma City from its sudden greyscape and paint everything in colors. It definitely comes through as cartoony and relatively family-friendly and reminds me a bit of Katamari Damacy. It’s an all-around charming game.
Lastly, we have Armed and Dangerous, yet another game that throws plenty of jokes at you. They don’t land as well as The Book of Unwritten Rules 2, but they’re entertaining enough to carry you along. You get to shoot your way through 21 action-packed levels as the Lionhearts as you try to save the world. You know, if you don’t destroy it first.
The offerings this month are definitely better than last month and certainly more lighthearted. Most of them are worth your time to at least download and check out the first few hours to see if they pique your interest.
As always, you can still download one of August’s offerings, Override: Mech City Brawl, through September 15.
