Kate and Alice/Beth, Batwoman

No matter what the news of Ruby Rose’s departure might mean for season two of Batwoman, season one was one of the best seasons of television this year. Period. Kate Kane is a bar owner by day and Batwoman by night. And at the heart of the show is the relationship between Kate and her sister, Beth (played by Rachel Skarsten and now going by the name Alice), who Kate thought had died in a car crash when they were kids.

As adults, both grew up to be capable young women, though under different circumstances. Beth found the strength to escape her demented captor, while Kate had the courage to come out as a lesbian after getting kicked out of military school. While Supergirl promised that season five would be a fight for Lena’s soul, the real fight was on Batwoman for Beth’s. Despite the atrocities she committed, Kate was determined to find some redeemable quality in her long-lost sister for much of the season. Beth herself struggled with her identity once she had been reunited with Kate. It’s such a shame that the season was cut short and now their story won’t continue on without Rose.
