The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu

Marie Lu is also bringing us a new story this month, delving into the realm of YA historical fiction — a first for the author of the Legend and The Young Elites series. The Kingdom of Back offers readers a unique spin on the story of Mozart — by following his older sister. And Nannerl has just as much talent as her brother, Wolfgang, if not more. Unfortunately, as a young woman living in 18th-century Europe, she has little hope of every becoming a renowned composer.

Still, Nannerl is desparate to be remembered for something. She wants her skills to be recognized and to make some sort of impact on the world, and she gets the opportunity to turn that dream into a reality. Unfortunately, it sounds like there might be a serious catch if she chooses to bring her hopes to life. The synopsis for The Kingdom of Back reads:

"“And as Nannerl’s hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter. His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer. He has the power to make her wish come true—but his help may cost her everything.”"

Why do we get the feeling that Nannerl’s success hinges on destroying her relationship with her family, and especially her brother? The Kingdom of Back is sure to appeal to readers who enjoy familial drama, as well as history buffs and music lovers. Lu’s latest is currently available in print, as well as in ebook and audiobook format.
