Golden Globes 2020: Predicting the outcome of each major film category
The 77th annual Golden Globes air this evening, revealing which films, television series, and talents will take home awards. But first, we’re giving our predictions for the night ahead.
It’s that time again: The 77th annual Golden Globes are here, and tonight we’ll find out which films, television series, and talents will take home awards in their categories. When it comes to movies, the past year has been full of massive hits — many of which have been nominated for awards. We’ve also seen a number of stellar performances by actors and actresses nominated in the major film categories, and of course, the nominees are full of talented directors (unfortunately, none of whom are women).
With so much talent up for this year’s Golden Globe awards, it’s hard to predict which films and which performances will come out on top — but we’re sure going to try.
Here are our predictions for the winners for each major film category for this year’s Golden Globes.
Best Motion Picture – Drama: The Irishman
Although films like Joker and Marriage Story have received plenty of attention from critics and audiences alike — and are arguably more deserving of a Golden Globe than The Irishman — it seems likely Martin Scorsese’s Netflix film will win in the category of Best Motion Picture – Drama if only for the names attached to it.
Not only is Scorsese someone the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is likely to give this honor to, but the actors in this film are big names in the Boy’s Club that makes up the Association. We’d love to have more faith than that, but it’s difficult to.
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
Considering Quentin Tarantino is attached to Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood — and given how much attention this movie has received, to the point where audiences want a director’s cut — this one is likely to receive the honor of Best Comedy.
Best Actor – Drama: Adam Driver
Of all the actors nominated for this category, Adam Driver feels like the obvious choice to win. His performance in Marriage Story has been lauded by critics and audiences, and the internet has been raving about him recently. If 2019 was the year of Keanu Reeves, we’re willing to bet 2020 will be the year of Adam Driver. That could certainly start with him winning a Golden Globe.
Best Actress – Drama: Scarlett Johanssen
While we’d love to see Saoirse Ronan or Charlize Theron take home an award for Best Actress, we can definitely see the award going to Scarlett Johanssen. It seems like Marriage Story is poised to take home more than one award tonight, and Johanssen is certainly a big enough actress that we could see the Association giving her this honor.
Best Actor – Musical or Comedy: Eddie Murphy
Dolemite Is My Name needs to take home something tonight, and Eddie Murphy’s performance in the film is worthy of a Golden Globe. Added to the fact that he’s one of the biggest names on the list of nominations, it seems that Murphy could win big tonight. Despite the other actors giving similarly worthy performances, our bet is on him.
Best Actress – Musical or Comedy: Ana de Armas
Maybe this is wishful thinking, but Ana de Armas taking home an award for Knives Out just makes sense. Her performance throughout the film is stellar, and it’s been praised by critics. On top of that, we just can’t see this ceremony not giving anything to a cult hit like Knives Out. And while we don’t think the film will win Best Comedy, it certainly could take home an award for one of its main performances.
Best Director – Motion Picture: Martin Scorsese
Like we said earlier, The Irishman is likely to receive lots of love during this year’s Golden Globes ceremony, and by association, so is Scorsese. Adding to that is the fact that Scorsese claims this is his final film — and as Elle points out, the Association is likely to use that as reasoning to present Scorsese with Best Director.
Best Screenplay: Marriage Story
We think Marriage Story might take home many of the night’s awards, and it seems like the film could win for Best Screenplay — particularly if we’re wrong about it winning in the acting categories above. Even if it does get other awards, though, the Netflix film is well written and lauded by critics, so it seems plausible it could still take home the award.
(If not, our second bet is on Parasite.)
Best Animated Feature: Frozen 2
When it comes to Best Animated Feature, there’s really only one movie we can see winning. Although the Toy Story and How to Train Your Dragon sequels certainly received plenty of hype over the past year, Frozen 2 has undoubtedly received more — and the movie is the most deserving, with a script and score worthy of a Golden Globe.
Best Foreign Languange Film: Parasite
Just like with Best Animated Feature, Best Foreign Language Film is likely an obvious choice. While all of the films on the nominations list are critically acclaimed, everyone seems to be talking about Parasite — and it’s very unlikely the film will walk away from tonight’s ceremony without an award.
