Best movie musicals: The Sound of Music

Again, the magic of Julie Andrews is on full display in a classic movie musical. With The Sound of Music, we get a drama set in 1938 Austria. In a time when the Nazis are rising, the Von Trapps are family in need of a governess. And when they end up with Maria, a young woman who helps to bring love back into their lives, their world is changed forever.

While there is plenty of beauty to The Sound of Music, there is also the horror of war in the background to ground this musical in the reality of the real world. The fact that this musical is based on a real family and their journey from Austria makes it that much more impressive.

And yes, the family really was very musical, which means that their life deserved to be made into a musical that captivated audiences around the world.

It’s not just the story that is captivating and impressive, as the music is also just as important. From “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” to “My Favorite Things” there are a number of beautiful songs that many of us know and love. And in many cases, these songs are like earworms that once we hear them, we keep them on repeat in our minds.

Honestly, this is such a classic film that it has become tradition to watch The Sound of Music on Easter Sunday every year. If we happen to sing along to every song, who really has to know that?
