Ron’s famous chess game

If anyone ever doubts the fact that Ron is one of the most loyal friends in the Harry Potter series, just replay the game of Wizard’s Chess from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for them. While Ron defends and stands by Harry throughout the whole first installment, this is the moment it becomes clear that he’s in their friendship for the long haul. After all, you don’t just sacrifice yourself in a game of real-life Wizard’s Chess for any old person.

And that’s exactly what Ron does upon realizing that there’s no other way to win Professor McGonagall’s transfigured chess game. The only way for any of the trio to move on and prevent the Sorcerer’s Stone from getting stolen is for Ron to remove himself from the game. And that, unfortunately, includes a pretty sharp blow to the head from one of the gigantic chess pieces.

Thankfully, Ron winds up being OK after all of this. But it still marks his first big heroic moment in the series, and that’s why we love it so much. And Dumbledore apparently agrees, as he used Ron’s clever tactics as a reason to award Gryffindor some more house points at the end of the movie. There’s nothing better than watching Ron and the others get the praise they deserve.
