Hot off the $1 billion+ box office of the live action remake of Aladdin, Disney is reportedly already in the early stages of developing a sequel.

Even though Aladdin is barely out of theaters, it seems that Disney is wasting no time when it comes to making plans for sequels. Dumbo may not have broken any box office records, but The Lion King‘s massive gross is a clear sign that live-action adaptations won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Maleficent: Mistress of EvilMulan, and The Little Mermaid are all set to release in the near future, and according to a recent interview, it appears that there’s another title to that could soon be added to Disney’s reboot list: The Return of Jafar.

Aladdin producer Dan Lin recently revealed in an interview with SYFY that Disney would “love” to make another live-action Aladdin. According to Lin, the sequel is in “early stages,” but they’re “certainly talking about another movie”.

If the live-action sequel turns out to be an adaptation of The Return of Jafar, that will make it a Disney landmark: the first live-action sequel to be a direct adaptation of a preexisting movie.

Though it is an exciting landmark ,we aren’t all that excited for the movie itself. Aladdin, like The Lion King  opened to fairly positive but mostly mediocre reviews, and those films drew on some pretty stellar source material. The Return of Jafar, however, was a straight-to-DVD critical flop that doesn’t have nearly as much goodwill as other Disney classics.

We’re not big fans of Disney remakes as it is, so the prospect of a live-action version of one of Disney’s most forgettable sequels isn’t all that enticing to us. However, if history repeats itself, we can count on the proposed sequel to be a crowd-pleasing cash cow for the House of Mouse.
