No one won on The Bold Type this week. It was a rough turn of events for Kat, Jane and Sutton in the penultimate episode of the season.

It was an incredibly close call, but Kat Edison will not be the next city councilwoman for District 1.

Much like the crowd at her party, I was booing at my screen when the announcement came. It was arguably the only real twist of the night, and it hurt. Even though it would mean leaving Scarlet – something she aptly freaked out about – becoming a city councilwoman would’ve set Kat’s dream in motion.

When we first met her in the pilot of The Bold Type, it certainly didn’t seem like her dream was politics. But she was a woman who clearly wanted to inspire and change the world; she was ready to set Twitter ablaze when Adena was detained at the airport!

So it was fitting then, though not unexpected, that it was Adena that Kat went to when the panic set in. Adena was able to remind Kat just how fierce and inspiring she is, political title or not. Adena didn’t push Kat one way or the other, just offered support.

It was a beautiful episode for Kadena shippers, but definitely created “open-sure” for Kat. That door is wide open right now. And with the election over, the battle lost, things with Tia are more uncertain than ever.

The same can be said for Janestripe. Ryan’s been out on his book tour for what, two weeks now? Maybe three? And…he cheated! He cheated. Ryan cheated.

It was pretty easy to guess, considering his NPR interview, and then especially after his drunken, oddly emotional call to her from the bar. Knowing his former reputation, perhaps we should be thankful it was just a kiss.

But even a kiss is still cheating, and Jane is understandably devastated. Even she alludes to the idea that if this is what happens after less than a month, how can she trust him on the rest of the tour?

She doesn’t have a whole lot of time to worry about that though; her and Jacqueline’s article is officially live, and there’s sure to be fallout to come.

Sadly, it’s not in the print magazine. Pamela Dolan is an aggressive woman, and went to a competing outlet, with her own spin on the story. Jane and Jacqueline had to act fast to avoid getting scooped, and that meant giving Patrick exactly what he needs to wrap the board around his finger.

It was the right thing to do, and Jacqueline knew it, but it still doesn’t sit quite right. Still, those models will get their justice.

Unfortunately, models were the root of Sutton’s problem this week. Well, actually, it was Carly’s problem. She’s young, impressionable, and growing up in the age of Instagram. All she wants is to be thin and glamorous like those models.

It’s a storyline that young girls are facing in the real world everyday. Sutton brilliantly helped Carly through, but it was a storyline that likely could have, and maybe should have, had its own entire episode.

Still, it was nice to see Sutton handling a problem that wasn’t Richard-related – at least, for most of the episode. In the final minutes, Richard revealed that he turned down his dream job, because it’s in San Francisco.

Seriously, could we please just let Suttard live happily for a bit? Give us more “Hey babes” and Ken Doll jokes.

All in all, it was an episode rife with drama. It could’ve easily worked as a season finale, which makes me even more worried for the actual finale next week.

Next. Kesha's new song is a rebel anthem. dark
