Food, Inc.

Where to stream: Hulu

Hulu subscribers can stream Food, Inc. for free and they certainly won’t be disappointed with the food lessons it’s serving up. Filmmaker Robert Kenner takes the book Food, Inc. by Karl Webber and turns it into a documentary to educate people about the food industry.

The film focuses on the inhumane practices of the meat industry and pulls focus on how it’s environmentally unsustainable, as well as economically. The focus then turns to the grain industry and how it has gained the same rep for being unsustainable. Food, Inc. points the audience to changes that must be made in order to keep feeding the world.

The third point that this film focuses on is the labeling of food products. Companies produce cheap food that is doused in preservatives for a fresh look. But, what do these contaminants do to our diet and therefore, our bodies? This film will enlighten you on the importance of diet and shed a light on the business and economic perspective of the consumption of food.

On the bright side, the documentary does include how big-name stores such as Walmart are beginning to embrace organic, all-natural, and just all-around better food for their shoppers. Instead of fighting against this change in society, they are working with it, in order to give people healthier options.

If you like this documentary, definitely consider giving the book a read, too. It provides even more insight into the cruel world of the food industry from farm to shelf.  And, though it may be hard to hear about the inhumane practices, it is important to know what’s being done so you can have food on your table.
