Keep Westeros alive by visiting these Game of Thrones travel destinations
Fearing the end of Game of Thrones? These Game of Thrones travel destinations can have you re-living all your favorite moments time and again.
What inspires your next trip, vacation or travel itinerary? For some fans, Game of Thrones travel destinations could make the end of the uber-popular series seem less painful. While the real-life scenery may not perfectly match the cinematic world, the similarities are there. Although a plane ticket might not earn you the Iron Throne, these destinations will be quite memorable.
Iceland
While Iceland has become a hugely popular travel destination on its own, the country and its National Parks have been featured in Game of Thrones. For example, the Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was featured in battle scenes.
Thingvellir National Park offers a wide array of activities. From an interactive media visitor center to various hiking trails across the park, the views are breathtaking. For the very adventurous, consider diving the rifts. Considered one of the best diving sites in Iceland, the beautiful visibility will definitely take your breath away.
Another famous Icelandic natural feature is seen in Game of Thrones. The Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier not in the artic, could make anyone wish to see what goes beyond the wall. Consider exploring some of the majestic waterfalls and horseshoe cliffs as well.
Croatia
While several locations in Croatia were used in the various Game of Thrones seasons, Fort Lovrijenac is predominately featured. Although the impressive Jesuit Staircase might seem arduous, it won’t be a walk of shame. The fort has been used for various plays and festivals.
Many of the medieval buildings, churches, and historic streets serve as the backdrop for many scenes. In some ways, these real-life old towns embrace their history. The intricacies of the architecture given the time period are something to celebrate.
Actually, Croatia offers several Game of Thrones location tours. From exploring old towns to seeking those breathtaking views, a tour can be the easiest way to take in all the sites. Just remember that many of these locations do have a historical significance beyond a television series.
Spain
Fans of the show aren’t afraid of a little bloodshed. In a way, the Osuna bull ring in Seville seemed fitting for the epic fighting pits of Essos. Over time, the bull ring has incorporated its connection to the television series into an exhibit. Also, some locations in the area offer themed experiences.
While the bull ring’s connection to the show is clear, why not take the time to explore the history and culture behind bullfighting. Although terribly graphic, the dance between the matador and the toro is just as tenuous as any battle for the Iron Throne.
Several other Spanish locations have been featured in the series as well. From Castillo de Almodóvar del Río near Córdoba to Castillo de Zafra, these historic castles will instantly transport you to pivot moments from previous seasons. Take a moment to explore the stories behind these castles. Those real-life battles for supremacy might be more intriguing than the battle for the throne.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland and its picturesque locations have been featured numerous times in Game of Thrones. Many of Northern Ireland’s dark, winding roads have been the path for characters on their journey. While you might not ride a horse down Dark Hedges, you can create a story about your own path to power.

In many cases, the Northern Island gothic architecture had the right visual theme for the series. The very popular Castle Ward offers Winterfell Tours for Game of Thrones fans.
While some people might be unsure about turning a historic castle into a pop culture tourist destination, this phenomena does bring new life into the area. Tourist dollars help the economy. Additionally, visitors don’t have to just make this visit about the TV show. Adding some Irish history or architectural discovery into the mix expands the purpose.
These Game of Thrones travel destinations are just a few examples of the numerous locations that fans can visit across the globe. In a way, these real-life locations ensure that the Game of Thrones fandom continues beyond those television seasons. People can literally step into a battle scene, climb stairs and start their own journey for greatness.
