Game of Thrones: Honoring our favorite Westerosi moms for Mother’s Day

Maege Mormont
Maege Mormont was the fierce warrior mother of our beloved Lyanna Mormont. This character actually was in the background in earlier seasons, but we know her best by the example she set for Lyanna, who boldly declares, “My mother wasn’t a great beauty…She was a great warrior.”
Maege kept her own last name when she married, fought on the battlefield, and inspired her daughter to her last breath. Strong women raise strong women. I imagine these two are riding with the valkyries now as a mother-daughter duo.

Olenna Tyrell
Olenna Tyrell was a mother and grandmother. Think back to “Dark Wings, Dark Words,” when she and Margaery invite Sansa to have some cheese and lemon cakes. The teamwork that Margaery and Olenna display, as they work perfectly in sync to obtain information, build trust, and perhaps make an ally in the north, is as graceful as a ballet. She not only trained Margaery well, but they clearly developed a mutual admiration and respect for one another.
Olenna is determining whether the King himself is fit to be in her family tree. This makes it all the more meaningful in “The Broken Man,” when Margaery refuses to break character in front of the septa and slips Olenna a paper with nothing more on it than a scribbled rose. Olenna takes it and knows exactly what her granddaughter is trying to tell her; she’s still a Tyrell.

Gilly
Gilly and Sam are nothing but sweet, endearing moments sprinkled in a show of murder and mayhem. From every moment cuddling with little Sam to their announcement made in the most recent episode, “The Last of the Starks.” Congratulations! Just don’t die. Gilly pats her belly while Sam stammers to Jon, explaining how women get pregnant and all that. She has that serene, confident look that says, “Been there, done that!” Yes, mama, you got this!

Melisandre
Melisandre, mother of shadow-demon-Stannis had the most powerful.. .nah I’m just kidding. She had no “endearing” motherhood moments per se, but this old skit from Late Night with Seth Meyers of her talking about her birth story makes my day.
Game of Thrones continues next Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
