With the majority of the show’s characters in one place, the second episode of Game of Thrones will begin to unravel some of the series’ major plot points.

The Game of Thrones season eight premiere consisted mostly of setup and reunions, but all of those long-awaited moments are preparing the characters—and the viewers—for what’s to come during the next five episodes of the final season.

Now that the majority of our characters are in one place (which, conveniently, is exactly where the Night King is heading), they can begin to deal with the tensions that have been building since the very beginning.

We’ve already seen plenty of strained interactions between Daenerys and the Northerners, none of whom are thrilled that Jon bent the knee to the dragon queen. But as the preview for episode 2 suggests, Daenerys is about to have an even more uncomfortable meeting—this time with Jaime Lannister, the man who killed her father and won the Iron Throne for Robert Baratheon. To make things even more awkward, he also happens to be the brother of her Hand.

It’ll be interesting to see how Daenerys deals with Jaime, knowing that her father was about to burn most of King’s Landing to the ground to maintain his rule over the Seven Kingdoms. Some would hail Jaime as a hero, but Daenerys is also unlikely to thank him for being the reason that she and her brother were forced into exile.

During this episode, Jon will also have to deal with the news that Sam delivered him during the season premiere. Now that Jon (ahem, Aegon Targaryen) knows that he’s the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen—as well as the heir to the Iron Throne—he’s going to have some difficult decisions to make when it comes to Daenerys. Prepare for more brooding on his part.

Of course, Jon won’t have too much time to dwell on his ancestry. The promo trailer for the second episode also shows Tormund reaching Winterfell in time to warn Jon about the Night King’s impending arrival. He tells him that they have a day at most to prepare for the attack, so our characters will probably need to pause the drama halfway through the episode to begin preparing for war.

With all of that to consider, fans have plenty of reasons to be both excited and nervous for tonight’s episode.
