Sesame Street managed to make Game of Thrones child-friendly
Game of Thrones regularly has multiple adult-content warnings. Sesame Street does not, and yet managed to create an entire video with Thrones characters.
Sometimes, even though it feels like we live in the worst timeline, there are still magical things that happen. Sometimes, it takes a furry 3-year-old monster to mend divides that have lasted for years. Sometimes, Sesame Street visits the world of Game of Thrones, plays it completely straight, and manages to save just a tiny bit of time for humor.
After all, not even Cersei Lannister, who currently wants both of her brothers dead, can resist the charm of Elmo in his very own armor.
Well, at least not this version of Cersei.
Check out the clip below:
The funny thing is that Tyrion has probably wanted to say “this is why you don’t have any friends” to Cersei forever. He’s taken more subtle shots at her pretty much every time they’ve shared scenes, so why wouldn’t that kind of a line be in a gentle parody?
Also, kudos to Sesame Street for working in a joke about the multiple meanings of toast. Tyrion and Cersei are probably the characters with the worst drinking problems on Game of Thrones, and adults who love the show will enjoy that, while kids probably just love toast too. Granted, this one is absolutely meant more for adults, but that’s okay. It’s still an important lesson for everyone to learn and remember.
This also isn’t the first time that Sesame Street has done something with Game of Thrones; there’s a clip called “Game of Chairs” right there on the official Sesame Street YouTube. Additionally, as part of the new respect campaign for Sesame Street and HBO, there’s a Westworld parody titled “Respect World” with Cookie Monster. Finally, Common stepped in to bring a new song to the street.
As much as last week’s episode of Game of Thrones had some hilarious lines, we think that Elmo, Cersei, and Tyrion might have gotten more laughs in 95 seconds than “Winterfell” did in 54 minutes. Just rewatch all the facial expressions happening in that clip up there.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO.
