Game of Thrones season 8: Prepare for a Tyrion and Jaime reunion
Sharp-eyed Game of Thrones fans have spotted something that should mean we’ll have another emotional scene between the Lannister brothers this week.
Yesterday’s Game of Thrones pictures for episode 2 of season 8 had plenty to ooh and ahh over, including another look at Tyrion Lannister as well as a shot of Jaime Lannister standing trial. However, the fans of r/freefolk have gone above and beyond just posting the photos. Instead, they’ve zoomed in, as they did with determining that Daenerys is at Dragonstone at some point in the season, and have discovered something in the photo of Tyrion.

That something actually happens to be a Valyrian steel sword hilt, and it’s that of Widow’s Wail, wielded by Jaime Lannister. None of this should really be a surprise; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage, as actors, tend to turn out great scenes when they’re placed together.

If we had to guess, this scene probably comes after Daenerys talks to Jaime, just based on the expression on Tyrion’s face specifically. With the new context that his brother is in the room, he could have realized that his queen is not particularly inclined to mercy yet again, and has the bad politics to talk about these kinds of things in front of others who should be her allies; he could be processing his sister’s betrayal; he could just be morose that his brother is also sad. Any and all of those things could drive him to drink.
However, it is notable that Jaime’s allowed to keep his weapon, assuming that it’s Jaime standing with it out of focus. Whatever ends up happening in the great hall of Winterfell, it’s not something that seems to require him being imprisoned or disarmed.
Who speaks up for him, then, if Daenerys doesn’t tell Jaime he’s allowed to live after spending what sounds like quite a lot of time talking about what he’s done? Tyrion might be the one to do it, and he might be realizing how much it’ll cost him with Daenerys as he drinks.
There’s a lot of different ways that this scene could go, and we’re excited to see what Game of Thrones opts for.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
