Coldplay – “Fix You”

When Coldplay released the song “Fix You,” the lead singer of group, Chris Martin, was married to Gwyneth Paltrow. The song was written after the actress’ father’s death, and was apparently inspired by the man. In fact, unable to use a church organ that had originally inspired him, Martin turned to a keyboard that his father-in-law Bruce Paltrow had picked up right before his death.

Once he started using the keyboard, the music just began to flow. While Chris Martin and the rest of Coldplay have not confirmed that this song was specifically written for Gwyneth Paltrow, it did come out of a time when he was unable to fix things for his then-wife. While he could be there for her after her father’s death, there is nothing he could do to actually fix her or make things better.

Since the song was released, Martin has said that it is one he is the most proud of, and that it helped get him and the group through one of the roughest periods in their life.

Though Coldplay and Chris Martin may not have confirmed the inspiration for the song, it seems that Paltrow’s mother Blythe Danner has said in the past that the song was in fact written for Gwyneth. Plus, it is said that the song itself was dedicated to Bruce Paltrow, which certainly helps support what Danner had to say.

No matter what the inspiration for the song is, it is clear that it was written when it was needed most and whether it helped in some way or not, it was a beautiful sentiment told in song.
