Don’t worry, Goose the cat is (probably) still around in the MCU

The unequivocal star of Captain Marvel was Goose the “cat,” and fans want to know what Goose is up to now. Kevin Feige provided some answers about what’s up with everyone’s favorite alien housepet.

WARNING! This story contains spoilers for Captain Marvel.

The scene-stealer in Captain Marvel, hands down, was Goose the cat — who, by the end of the film, we find out is actually an alien species known as Flerkens. Despite Goose’s tendency to shoot tentacles from her mouth or swallow people and objects whole, fans can still agree that Goose is the most adorable little kitty-like alien out there.

The only problem is, no one truly knows what Goose is up to nowadays. Captain Marvel took place in 1995, meaning more than 20 years have passed when we catch up to current events in movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. What’s even more alarming is that cats don’t typically have a long lifespan, and 20 years would definitely be pushing it for a dear little kitty.

Luckily Goose is a Flerken, not a cat, and we’ve got answers from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about what could be happening with Goose now. When asked by /Film if Goose the “cat” could be (knock on wood) dead, Feige answered with a reply that could offer some hope to anxious fans:

"But that’s a cat, a Flerken might be longer lived. And as we know from the comics, Flerken procreate quite a bit. I don’t want to say Tribble-esque, but there’s sort of points in those comics where they sort of are in terms of how many appear. So I’m sure there are more flerken out there. And is Goose out there? She could be."

It certainly is good news to know that Goose could be out there, though we were hoping for a more definitive answer. If Marvel Studios knows what’s good for them, they should definitely bring back Goose into the present-day MCU.

That may mean waiting for Captain Marvel 2, perhaps with certified cat mom Nick Fury handing her off to Carol Danvers so the duo can be together just like in the comics. Although, Kevin Feige also seems to be keen on the idea of letting Goose into a Disney+ series.

Feige pondered on the idea saying:

"That’s one of the fun things about Disney+ is we could actually do ideas like that. The fun thing about introducing new characters and all these movies is suddenly going from a character that maybe you’d heard of if you’d read the books, but if you hadn’t, you’d never heard of him…. And the fact that you and other people are asking, “When do we see more of the cat?” The question is “how long – what is the lifespan of a Flerken?” It’s a good question."

This idea doesn’t necessarily mean Goose or other Flerkens will have to appear in a Captain Marvel-specific Disney+ show. Since it’s an alien species, they can show up in just about any series and take the show to a whole new level. (Loki, for example, needs a companion. So why not let it be an equally-as-impish Flerken?)

Even if Flerkens don’t appear in Disney+, we definitely need to see more of these adorable creatures in MCU movies. Marvel’s good at listening to its fans and bringing them more of what they want to see, so they can’t go disappointing us now.
