With the final season hitting its stride, Project Runway All Stars is looking to get topical. While the season has taken on upcycling, recycling and other hot topics, this week’s challenge looks like something straight off the red carpet. How will the designers handle gender neutral streetwear?
According to Lifetime, this week’s episode synopsis states “The world championship heats up as Asia Kate Dillion joins the panel to judge gender-neutral streetwear that can be worn by anyone.” This short synopsis could be just the tip of the iceberg for a very interesting challenge.
Looking at fashion today, gender neutral designs are becoming more and more prevalent. From Billy Porter’s tuxedo gown to women walking the red carpet in pantsuits, there are fewer norms when it comes to fashion. Pushing boundaries is, and should be, totally accepted.
What should make this challenge interesting will be the idea of being fashion forward. For decades, women have been boring men’s clothes. Who hasn’t grabbed their boyfriend’s dress shirt in a pinch? Still, those ideas aren’t fashion forward; they are fashion necessity.
Looking at this week’s episode, Anthony Ryan should excel in this challenge. If he can find a design that is innovative yet approachable, it could be his challenge to win.
Dmitry and Irina could be in danger of going home. From the ruffles to the short skirts, these looks aren’t necessarily gender neutral. Hopefully these designers can find the editing button to make the looks fit the challenge.
Otherwise, this week’s challenge should spark a good fashion discussion. Moving the concept off the page into the real world makes a statement. Maybe the next time you go shopping, the lines between the women’s line and the men’s line might be a little more blurred.
